Media Advisory- 5 police agencies partner to open new high-tech training simulator

Sunday, Mar 1, 2020

Media are invited to join Delta Police, Port Moody Police, Metro Vancouver Transit Police, New Westminster Police and West Vancouver Police, as well as their police boards and mayors, today for the grand opening of the new Regional Municipal Training Centre.  The key element is a state-of-the-art simulator which provides the opportunity for police officers to gain valuable experience in decision making during potential use-of-force incidents, in a highly realistic environment.

  • When: Monday, March 2, 1:00 - 2:00 pm
  • What: Get an inside peak into this new training facility, consisting of a classroom, mat room, as well as a separate large simulator room.
  • Who: Police Chiefs and/or Deputy Chiefs from all five agencies will be present for the grand opening, along with police board members and mayors from the municipalities.
  • Speakers: Delta Mayor George Harvie, Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord and Delta Police Deputy Chief Norm Lipinski. There will be a Q&A period and media will have the chance to speak with representatives from other cities and agencies.
  • Where: 8100 Nordel Way, across from Nordel CVSE inspection station. Note, building is not signed, as this is not a public facility. (Please note there are other tenants, so do not park in front of bays 8 or 9.)
  • Visuals: Uniformed officers demonstrating simulator in action and running through a number of scenarios, specialized training weapons for simulator, press conference, and hand-to-hand grappling demos conducted by police in the mat room
  • Practical stuff: No flash photography in the simulator during the demonstration. The flash will disrupt the simulation as it is interpreted as the sound of gunfire. No shoes permitted on the mats in the mat room. As the simulator can only fit a limited number of people, media may need to wait to view it, though media will be prioritized. Grappling demonstrations will be provided. Light refreshments will be served.

There will be no media interviews provided in advance of the press conference. A media release, photos and video will be issued following the press conference.
